Cute outfit causes pregnant lady to freeze to death

36 weeks

Yesterday I decided not to wear sweat pants for a change. You may have seen me wear this maternity dress (Kohl's) over the summer. Seems a shame for it to not get any more use, though, so I winterized it with a long sleeved shirt (Banana Republic), jersey tights, and my Xena the Warrior Princess belt. But baby it's cold outside, so I put on a sweater, too.

Origami wrap sweater

I made a couple of these Origami Wrap Sweaters for gifts last Christmas using designer Martha McQuade's free pattern, but I never got around to taking photos or blogging about them. I made one for myself while I was at it. Now that the mercury is dipping into the 20s, this sweater is about to go into heavy rotation. The fabric is Vera Wang 100% wool jersey that I ordered from Fabric Mart--doesn't look like they have it in stock anymore. Like t-shirt jersey it doesn't fray, so the edges could be left raw. You should have seen the look on my dry cleaner's face when I walked in with the equivalent of a king sized bedspread to be steam pressed. She kept petting the fabric and asked what I was making. Then she gave me a look like, "Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Priceless.

Cutting the wool jersey

This lady made one, too. Like her, I had to make a paper model first to understand the construction. And I remember how nerve-wracking the cutting of the fabric was without a rotary cutter. Talk about sweating. I was terrified, and it took almost 2 hours for me to measure, measure again, measure yet again, and finally cut into the fabric for the sweaters. Scary stuff compared to the actual sewing which hardly took any time at all. Just three little seams on each.

While the outfit ultimately looked super cute, it was impractical for Christmas shopping with a 15 degree wind chill. Drafty! Next time it's back to sweats and sneakers.

you may have frozen your cookies off, but you looked AWESOME!!!

(also wishes to pet your fabric.)
(that sounded kind of sexual-harrassment-y, but I swear, it wasn't.)
